DUTIES:
The primary purpose of this position is to provide transportation and in-transit nursing care to a variety of medical, surgical, psychiatric, and long-term care patients within and outside of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. These patients may range from the ambulatory patient to the acutely and/or terminally ill patient.

performs and reinforces patient teaching according to pre-established plan and under the direction of the professional nurse

Maintains care of and instructs patients in their role of caring for various devices while in transit

closely monitors, observes for and promptly reports physical and emotional status changes such as bleeding, fainting, pain or speech disturbances

recognizes unusual conditions and initiates first aid measures for life threatening conditions such as cardiac/respiratory arrest or choking

ensures sufficient oxygen is available for the Veteran during transport

gives emotional support to patients and families during transport

maintains a daily tracking of trips to provide verification of patient location and safety

provides travel assistance to outpatients leaving the medical center by scheduling return trips with Transportation Company of pati! ents choice or by contacting the VA travel office

checks trans! portation equipment to ascertain proper functioning or need for repairs

cleans wheelchair's and ambulance stretchers

transports patient records and specimens according to policy and procedure

lift excessive amounts of weight when operating the ambulance stretcher during loading and unloading procedure.

maintains confidentiality in all aspects of care

Work Schedule:
7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. / 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. / 2:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. / 11:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
This position requires six months of general clinical experience as well as six months of specialized Nursing Assistant experience at the GS-3 level! or equivalent.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
The experience in nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical nursing, or patient care facility or in such work as that of a home health aide where the following duties were performed:

  • Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre and post operative care
  • Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures; such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus
  • Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording and reporting changes in their behavior and providing reassurance and encouragement
  • Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.

EDUCATION:
Successful completion of a 2-year degree program in an accre! dited community college, junior college, or college or university in pr! actical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician.

Certified Nursing Assistant is preferred but not required.
