Registered Nurse ( Patient Safety Specialist)

The Registered Nurse (Patient Safety Specialist) functions as a patient safety specialist in the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) and implemente r of patient safety policies and activities developed by the National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS). Reports to the TVHS to the assistant Chief, Quality, Safety, and Value helping to build and implement patient safety systems and promote the culture of safety within VA facilities and for VA patients in all healthcare settings. Direct support is provided to the development, maintenance, and operation of the patient safety processes at the facility level. This includes working with all levels of staff within the facility, including top-level management, root cause analysis (RCA) team members, RCA team leaders and RCA recorders. Works with, trains, and directs patient safety activities of similar personnel within the facility.

Responsible for translating patient safety policies, theories, and strategies into action within the complex interrelationships that exist. Has primary responsibility for training and implementation of the patient safety and RCA process to cli nicians, management, and all relevant support personnel within the Nashville Campus and associated facilities and operations, as assigned, within TVHS. Responsible for maintaining clear communication between the facility and NCPS to communicate relevant facility patient safety information, lessons learned from the facility which may have potential impact beyond the local level and to understand changes at the national level in the patient safety program.

Performs duties directly contributing to the administrative management of a healthcare delivery system. Duties require the ability to apply the specialized principles and practices of healthcare management in directing or supporting a healthcare delivery system. Provides full staff assistance on patient safety matters affecting patient care, education, and organizational policy. Serves as a staff member supporting the management team responsible for planning, organizing, developing, directing, and evaluating medical center patient safety operations. May entail other duties as assigned.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience:
BSN or Bachelors in related field with ADN/Diploma with approximately 2-3 years of experience or
Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field with no experience< br> Prefer 1-2 years of successful clinical nursing practice in an acute care or critical care setting


Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experienc e; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
