The shift leader, under the supervision of the Clinical Leader or Director, he/she is responsible and accountable for the care of the assigned patients and directs others to assure Patient-Centered Care which is based on patient needs, values, and choices. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously within the scope of professional standards, the rules and regulations established by the Tennessee Board of Nursing, and knowledge of the policies and procedures within M! ountain States Health Alliance. He/she demonstrates skill in d! eveloping and guiding collaborative collegial practice that delivers safe competent care based on meticulous application of the nursing process. He/she demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of the diverse cultural backgrounds of patients and caregivers. The position involves maintaining current knowledge of evidence based nursing practice and the ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills in the implementation of all phases of the nursing process. He/she actively participates in patient care quality and performance improvement through data collection, aggregation and analysis of relevant key indicators of quality (KIQ's). This commitment to quality results in the development and implementation of action plans to include the monitoring of the effectiveness of improvements (Hold the Gains) . The RN serves as a professional role model as a caregiver, mentor, teacher and resource for peers and other providers. He/she demonstrates competency in the care of the (circle ! all that apply): Neonate, Infant, Child, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric patient.

The Shift Leader assists with patient assignments, planning , organizing, evaluating, and supervising nursing care on the zone. The Shift leader provides direction and support for nursing staff. The Shift leader serves as role model for clinical and ethical practice on the zone. The Shift leader is responsible for education and implementation of patient centered care initiatives.

Individual must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and function as a liaison between physicians, interdisciplinary treatment team, patients, and families. It is of the utmost importance that written communication is legible.

This individual serves as resource and clinical expert for mentoring staff, team development, and nurse retention. The shift leader is expected to set an example for all employee! s of commitment and loyalty to MSHA by openly supporting and participat! ing in hospital projects and events. The person in this position must be able to work as a team leader by communicating effectively with team members and providing an open dialogue for solutions.

The person must be committed to continuing education by staying abreast of current medical/healthcare information and by applying evidence-based practices in areas of responsibility in order to remain competent in the ever changing role of the position and development in health care.

Teaching colleagues/peers and serving as an effective role model is an basis of professional practice. The Shift Leader demonstrates compliance with established MSHA policies, dress code, and standards of professional conduct. Confidentiality is essential to the role.

Individual will assist the clinical leader in interviewing and selection of team members, and provide input into competencies and evaluation of team members. Role modeling MSHA as the employer of choice for the ! region and maintaining turnover rates within organization parameters is essential toward retention of team members.

MSHA expects all team members to support the VOS initiative by demonstrating awareness of the VOS system and effectively applying it to his/her work.

Job duties of this position may require access to protected patient information (PHI). The team member will be accountable for appropriate use of the record and compliance with all confidentiality and security policy and procedures related to use, access, and disclosure of PHI.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Reports to Clinical Leader and Department Director

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE

1. Registered Nurse , must be licensed in the appropriate state,

2. Evidence of continuing education as required by the appropriate state Board of Nursing and demonstrated competencies for the role of shift leader .

3. Plans and conducts a minimum of two hours of job related ! educational programs

4. Obtains 12 hours education credit

5 . Verbalizes understanding of Shared Governance Model and willingly serves on at least one Shared Governance, hospital committee, task force, or project to improve patient care or work area

6 . Identifies relevant patient care and/or nursing practice KIQ's (key indicators of quality). This is achieved by using PDCA methodology and the appropriate data collection, aggregation, analysis and trending in the demonstration of measurable improvement outcomes.

7. Attends 75% of staff meetings and read 100% of the minutes from the meetings missed.

8. Must have knowledge of nursing processes and evidence based practice that constitutes the care given in an acute care hospital setting.

9. Meets competency requirements for Senior Primary Nurse

10. One year charge/management experience preferred

11. ACLS within one year of assuming the position

12. Excellent leadership skills as demonstrated by proven record of achie! vement.
