DUTIES:
The Nurse Manager is a professional nurse who is responsible and accountable for the planning, coordinating, administration and evaluation of nursing care in a designated clinical area as well as the management of assigned nursing personnel. He/she plans and evaluates staffing in an ongoing manner to provide continuous coverage for each 24 hour period and assigns staff to designated clinical areas based on workload and nursing needs of the patients. The incumbent will observe and evaluate the quality of nursing care provided by making periodic clinical patient rounds, reviewing nursing documentation in clinical records, and reviewing results of studies related to the delivery of patient care. He/she will collaborate with allied staff to identify nursing care based on patient status. The Nurse Manager will demonstrate effective interpersonal skills when interacting with patients, family members, staff and allied personnel, will maintain a positive work climate for the overall development of the nursing team and will act as a role model and conduct self in a professional manner. The incumbent will monitor the accuracy of medication administration, anticipate action, interaction and side effects and will initiate interventions based on sound clinical judgment and established policies and procedures. He/she will evaluate performance of unit personnel and conduct evaluation process in a timely manner which encourages staff acceptance and growth. The incumbent will authorize leave based on analysis of available staff and patient care requirements, monitor monthly usage, and will initiate corrective action as needed. The Nurse Manager will act as a technical, clinical and administrative resource to personnel and allied disciplines and will interpret and apply Medical Center, VACO and Nursing Service policies and procedures to unit personnel. The Nurse Manager is directly responsible to the Chief Nursing Service (CN) for Spinal Cord Injury.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizen of the United States. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia . In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Must be proficient in spoken and written English .

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

Education/Experience: (Preferred) Applicant must be a graduate of a NLN (National League of Nursing) accredited program. A Baccalaureate degree in nursing is preferred; a Masters Degree in Nursing is desired with a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of successful Spinal Cord Injury/Rehabilitation nursing practice in which professional, organizational and leadership skills have been consistently demonstrated at a highly satisfactory level. Excellent assessment skills and the ability to work collaboratively are highly desirable.

U.S.Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications (particularly positions with a

positive education requirement.) Therefore, applicants must report only attendance and/or degrees from
