You will be subject to a background/suitability investigation. DUTIES:

These positions involve a multi-grade career ladder . The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-06. At the GS-04 and GS-05 grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited sco! pe and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-06. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.
These positions are located in the Sterile Processing and Decontamination (SPD) section, Nursing Service, within the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System. The Medical Supply Technician rotates assignments among various sterilization, processing, decontamination, surgical tray assembly, reusable inventory, medical equipment processing and quality assurance functions. Major duties include: Decontaminates, sterilizes, and packages reusable medical supplies, instruments, equipment and apparatus' (Equipment includes but is not limited to infusion pumps, mobile suction pumps, intubation kits, crash carts and emergency disaster carts; Instruments include a variety of endoscopes and p! robes); Dissembles and positions all parts of technical reusable medica! l equipment (RME) to ensure the removal of bio burdens prior to sterilization; Performs leak tests on endoscopes to determine the water tight integrity of the scope before initiating the cleaning and high level disinfection process; Operates washer decontaminators, sonic washers, irrigators, laparoscopic insulation tester, automatic cart wash, and tube dryers; Determines the criticality category of RME using the Spaulding Classification System and interprets sterilization parameters provided by manufacturer guidelines to determine proper method of sterilization; Operates sterilizations equipment such as Steris system One, Steris Steam Sterilizers, Sterrad, heat sealers, and incubators; Troubleshoots complex sterilizers; Assembles minor and complex tray sets and instrumentation packs used for a variety of general and specialized medical and surgical procedures; Assembles surgical case carts according to physician preference and computer generated picking lists for use in ope! rating rooms; Performs quality assurance activities including monitoring biological and chemical indicators, Bowie dick tests, and time/temperature graphs; and, Performs all other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday through Friday, with possible weekends and including weekend rotation. Hours may include 7:30am-4:00pm, 3:30pm-12:00am, 12:00am-8:00am

To qualify for this position at the GS-4 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:
Experience: You must have six (6) months of general experience AND six (6) months of specialized experience. General experience is (1) any type of work that demonstrates your ability to perform the work of this position, and/or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of this occupation. Specialized experience is experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. You must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skil! l in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers (your work would have been closely supervised with specific and detailed instructions and your work may have been reviewed in progress and upon completion for accuracy and adherence to instructions and established procedures). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker. ~OR~
Education: Successfully completed two (2) years of study above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in courses such as medical supply processing, storage, and distribution; sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields related to this position. This study included training received through hospitals, military or employee development programs. This education was obtained in an accredited business or technical school, ! junior college, college or university for which high school graduation ! or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One full year of undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university. Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience, as described above. To qualify for this position at the GS-5 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:
Experience: You must have! at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Medical Supply Technician. Specialized experience is experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. You must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Your work would have been assigned by a supervisor indicating what is to be done and completed independently. You may have been given specific instructions fo! r unusual situations and your work may have been spot checked for accur! acy and compliance with established instructions and procedures. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant with responsibilities of sterilizing, storing and issuing sterile/unsterile medical supplies and equipment, corpsman, or laboratory worker, where you were responsible for performing these duties. ~OR~
Education: Successfully completed a full four-year course of study above high school leading to a Bachelor's degree that included at least 12 semester hours in courses such as medical supply processing, storage, and distribution; sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields directly related to this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. You must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Your work would have been assigned by a supervisor on a continuing or rotational basis and your work would have been completed independently according to accepted work procedures. Any problems or unusual situations that arise would have been reviewed by your supervisor or, if problems occur on shift or weekend assignments, independently resolved by you through negotiation and consultation with other medical personnel. Your work was reviewed through on-site inspection of work areas, work reports, and comments ! from users and hospital's infection committee. Examples of qualifying specialized experience may include work as an operating room technician or medical instrument technician where you were responsible for performing these duties. ~OR~

Physical Requirements: The person in this position usually stands and moves from one part of the room to another while performing duties. There is a frequent requirement for lifting packages weighing 50 pounds, and regularly pushes carts weighing up to 300 pounds for distances up to 2! 640 feet. On a regular and recurring basis, the person in this position! alternates between a contaminated environment and a carefully controlled clean environment. In both environments, the person in this position wears special clothing, hair covers, full face shield, and shoe covers which can be uncomfortably warm. While handling contaminated medical supplies, the person in this position also uses rubber gloves and an impervious gown. The work area is often hot and humid. The person in this position is subject to slipping on wet floors. The person in this position must use padded gloves to remove carts from sterilizers and trays from the carts. The person in this position is subject to burns from accidentally touching hot items, to cuts from both sterile and contaminated instruments, knife blades, and needles and dermatitis from frequent contact with cleaning agents. The person in this position often works around body fluids, mucus, excretions, and bits of tissue, some of which may be foul smelling. Strong, unpleasant odors are encountered wh! ile disinfecting instruments, patient care equipment, and work surfaces. The work area is noisy due to the clatter of metal instruments, rumbling of carts, and operation of pre-sterilizing equipment. Use of ultrasonic equipment may require use of hearing protection.
