DUTIES:
The incumbent serves as a Medical Support Assistant (MSA) in Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). The work is performed in or near the nurse's station contemporary medical care environment in the PACU. Duties include but are not limited to:

Scheduling appointments, including interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines.

Ensure that escort services and transportation are properly arranged.

Obtain vari! ous supplies for treatment of patients which may require paging the Anesthesia Technician for supplies.

Operate multi line telephone system to receive and relay incoming and outgoing telephone messages; fax/scan documents.

Prepare clinic visits.

Monitor both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility.

Verify and update demographics and insurance information

Process all emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals.

Perform basic eligibility, co pays and pre authorization requirements for specific coverage.

Work closely with professional staff to expedite emergency request as required for day-to-day patient care.

Maintain various unit files, forms and publications, include the unit census log.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship.

Six mo! nths experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills need to perform the duties of the position; or one year above high school; or equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
GS-3 IS THE ENTRY LEVEL

for the GS-0679 Medical Support Assistant Series and is used for applicants that meet the basic requirements.

GS-4:
Requires a minimum of one year experience in clerical or office work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position

or

two years of education above high school. Candidate must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) below:

Ability to meet, communicate and interact with individuals from varying backgrounds and other healt! h care team members in a courteous and helpful manner in order to complete job assignments.

Ability to use various types of office automation equipment and software.

Ability to set up, organize, and maintain record systems.

GS-5 LEVEL:
Requires a minimum of one year experience equivalent to the next lower grade level

or

4 years of education above high school. Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:

Ability to operate computerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/data into or from electronic medical records, scheduling systems and/or reports.

Knowledge of basic medical terminology.

Ability to make appointments in a clinical setting.

Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work.

Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with ! employees at varying grade levels.

Ability to identify custome! r's concerns, perform the tasks required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.

Physical Requirements:
The work is mainly sedentary but requires some bending, walking, standing and the carrying of such things as patient records, supplies and inter-office mail. This position may involve more frequent walking to various locations of the medical facility but these do not require unusual physical demands to perform work.
